Indonesia University of Education, Faculty of Social Science Education, Sociology Education Study Program was established on July 29, 2009 with a Decree from the Chancellor of UPI number 5346/H40/KL/2009.

The establishment of the Sociology Education Study Program was based on efforts to meet the needs of professional teachers in Sociology subjects which according to the results of a feasibility study found that Sociology learning at the school level so far has not been taught by teachers with Sociology Education backgrounds or these teachers have not pursued higher education in the Department or Sociology Education Study Program. It was also found that teachers had a mismatch between the disciplines they mastered and the task of teaching Sociology subjects. Indeed, there are Sociology teachers with undergraduate backgrounds from the Department of Sociology, but they are very few, less than one percent of the total Sociology teachers in West Java (Feasibility Study Results, 2008/2009). Several figures who participated in fostering the Sociology Education Study Program, including Prof. Dr. Sudardja Adiwikarta, Prof. Dr. Karim Suryadi, M.Si, Prof. Dr. R.
